Gene RoddenberryWhat is Star Trek Fandom? This question elicits so many emotions for me as I am that statement… so, who am I? I am a Trekkie. I am a Trekker. I am a Fan of Star Trek® and have been quite proud to say that for almost thirty years now. While I wasn’t around during the time of the Original Star Trek® TV Series, I was there for the subsequent Original Series Movies and everything since. I truly got hooked the moment I watched Far Point, the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation® for me that was it. It’s taken me a few years to come around to the reboot as it totally wipes out and erases everything that Gene created but its great nonetheless.

So, back to the basic, first question I posted, what is Star Trek Fandom? Well, it’s honestly more than just a few sentence that can be typed or scribbled down by someone. According to Wikipedia it’s like a Religion. “According to Michael Jindra of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the show's fandom "has strong affinities with a religious-type movement", with "an origin myth, a set of beliefs, an organization, and some of the most active and creative members to be found anywhere." While he distinguishes between Star Trek fandom and the traditional definition of religion that requires belief in divinity or the supernatural, Jindra compares Star Trek fandom to both "'quasi-religions,' such as Alcoholics Anonymous and New Age groups"—albeit more universal in its appeal and more organized—and civil religion.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_fandom.

Leonard Nimoy aka SpockThere are literally thousands upon thousands different views on this topic. The same could be said about the infinite websites of knowledge, source material, costume design, artwork, fan stories, etc. that can be found on the internet in regards to Star Trek® Next year will mark 50 years of the series, the longest ever for any television, movie or book series that has such an active fan base. To this day, there are still thousands of Cons (short for Convention) held world-wide in honor of Star Trek®. The actors and actresses are still as active today in the circuit as they were when it kicked one. Although the original cast is now dwindling to Kirk (Shatner), Sulu (Takei), Uhura (Nichols) and Checkov (Koenig). Sadly, earlier this year we lost Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock. He truly was an inspiration to many over the years and will be missed by all.

Captains ChairMany fans join a Star Trek® fan club or association that allows them to comingle with other fans and enjoy the thrill and excitement of the life of a Trekkie. Most of the fan clubs or associations are setup to mimic the structure from the series and that are hundreds and I mean literally hundreds of different Star Trek® fan clubs to join and choose from. There are fan clubs that are based solely upon the Federation and Starfleet, clubs based upon the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Empire, and some even for the Cardassians and Ferengi. The ultimate goal however of many is the feel of that crisp black leather, how it feels as it conforms to the arch of your back… the Captain’s Chair that is, as you sit in it as you become the leader of your fan club. Most call the President of their local branch or chapter, “Captain” that coveted title that allowed Kirk to keep going where no man had gone before.
